The Race for the White House by Hannah - August 2016 Scholarship Essay

Teenagers today are exposed to many opinions about politics. Their own opinions are influenced by the news and by their parents. This causes many to blindly agree with political figures and their ideas. Students often do not stop and think about what these ideas mean and how they can affect our country. For this reason, I believe that learning history in school has been the most effective for me.

In history class, I have learned about past political figures not only in the United States, but also around the world. I have learned about the different forms of government and how each affect the people under it's rule. Also, by studying prior presidents, I can recognize the ideas and actions taken that have bettered the United States. After obtaining this information in the classroom, I am better able to form an opinion about the political future of the U.S.

Studying history has made me grow not only as a student, but also as a young adult. In less than two years I will be eligible to vote. It is important that I make my decisions based on the history I have learned. Choosing a president or any representative should be based on knowledge of past ideologies and political issues. As a result of my studies, I am able to acknowledge the viewpoints of our past political figures and can apply this to make decisions about future leaders.

History, unlike many other subjects in school, allows students to form opinions and make decisions about the future they want not only for themselves, but also for their country. For this reason, history has taught me the most and has helped me grow.
