The Subject that has Grown me as a Student by Hannah - August 2016 Scholarship Essay
I go to a small, private, classical, Christian school. That means that in every subject we learn, it is integrated with the Bible and connected to how we can use it to strengthen our relationship with God. The subject that best did this, and that I grew the most from was Biology. Biology was taught by Dr. Phillips, a God-fearing man with an extraordinary passion for teaching student that there is an intelligent Designer of our world. This class gave me a new definition for learning, it gave me a passion for science, and it helped me to apply what I learned into every day life.
Before this class, I thought that the point of learning was to memorize facts and charts, then regurgitate them onto paper in order to get an A. During Biology, I learned about organisms and the way that the cell works and the intricate Divine design. Dr. Phillips would take ordinary animals and explain to us their unique designs and how such complex designs could happen by accident or my chance. This teaching technique allowed me to see the power and love that God has for us, because we are his most complex design. In this way I formed a new definition for learning: Learning is the means of seeing God’s handiwork. This is helped me grow in my relationship with God.
During this class I also gained a passion and love for science. Dr. Phillip’s own love and passion for science made me see the impact it had on him and I wanted to be apart of his. After studying the organisms and doing dissections, I became interested in medicine and learning about the human body. That has now sparked my interest in studying biology in college and going on to medical school.
After taking this class I now look for intelligent design in everything around me whether it be in nature or people. This class taught me to give praise to God in a totally different way. I learned that studying His creation is a form of worship, which I can apply to my everyday life. Dr. Phillips also inspired me to not just learn the lessons but understand them fully. Now I have facts and evidence for an intelligent Designer that I can use to defend my faith when I go to college and in the real world. This is by far the most valuable thing that I have learned and has helped to grow me as a student and Christian.
In conclusion, biology has taught me so much more than just how to dissect a frog. It has given me a passion and a new love and appreciation for God. This is not only my favorite subject, but the one that I have grown the most from.
