Business Law by Hanna - September 2017 Scholarship Essay
It is common for students entering their senior year of high school to be uncertain of what type of post-secondary education they would like to pursue. Luckily an elective course I took in my junior year helped make my decision clear. Selecting Business Law as one of my electives due to my interest in law and the judicial system cemented my choice in a degree to pursue and the University I would select to attend. Throughout the Business Law class I learned each day acquiring knowledge in the basics of law, specific alternatives to trial, and the value of legal documentation.
Business Law introduced me to the basics of trial, the understanding of charges, what determines if a charge is civil or criminal, and other basics like; time frame for trial, location for trial, and sentencing. The course also educated me to the options available to avoid trial. I learned about Mediation where the opposing parties present their positions and a mediator will attempt to make a decision that addressees each sides concerns and Arbitration where the arbitrator reviews each sides position and may side completely with on side or the other.
In addition to the many things taught like trial, mediation, and arbitration I learned about legal documents. I learned how different legal documents worked. Documents such as contracts and wills. I learned how contracts can vary and cover almost anything from rental contracts, employment contracts, and even marriage contracts. When learning about legal contracts I was intrigued by how the language could vary and have stipulations that if not followed could result in termination of the contract and legal consequences. I was impressed by the discussion and explanation of wills and how detailed a person can be when explaining what they want to happen after their death ranging from their burial down to the detailed plans for distribution of their estate.
My choice to elect to take Business Law based on my interest in the judicial system not only increased my knowledge about the the justice system and some of its terminology and processes but solidified my choice in a field of study and a career. I have applied to and toured to Northern Michigan University to study to be a Paralegal. NMU has a special program that allows students to begin in the Paralegal program and if they are excelling enter into the Law School program (after 3 three years at NMU) transferring Michigan State University to have the opportunity to complete law school in an additional three years.
The elective course of Business Law was a great course and has impacted my direction in university, course of study, and career options. I would encourage any student with an interest in the judicial system to to take the course.
