Unity is the Enabler of a Positive Change by Hallie - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
My goal these high school years has been to create unity within our school. I want students to be able to feel involved and included, as well as to lessen the amount of cliques. But looking around my school, I saw many cliques, leaving the “outcasts” to sit alone. This did not sit well with me.
I believe that if there is room for improvement, then there is work to be done. And since there is always room for improvement, there is always work to be done. Thus, I have been working hard to achieve this goal. One way I have created more unity is by starting a Kindness Club at our school, which promotes friendship and helping others through small acts of kindness. With this club I have been able to see students feel more confident and important, as they are able to help others and create change in their community. I have had club members ecstatic to come to meetings because of the opportunity to be involved and help others. Not only are members able to participate in service work, but they are also creating unity throughout the club and the school.
Another way I have worked to accomplishing my goal of creating a more welcoming and friendly environment in my school is by taking leadership. I had the opportunity to run for student body president and after receiving that position, I’ve had the responsibility to reach out to my fellow students to get them involved in other organizations. I have been able to use social media to help students be involved and kept in the loop, as well as planning events and carrying out traditions to make high school an enjoyable experience. I work as part of a group of officers to run social media pages and spread the word for projects that we are working on to help students feel more included. Students are now able to more easily view announcements, while being able to use the communication side of social media to share their ideas too!
Through these organizations, I have been able to accomplish and reach many goals. More unity can be achieved, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. It has been very rewarding seeing students make new friends and feel that they are apart of something important, and most importantly, seeing students find their importance. I have a deep love for this school and only hope for it to become a memorable place where everyone can feel important and included.
