Principles of Health Science by Hailey - February 2025 Scholarship Essay
My freshman year of high school I enrolled into a class that I thought would be an easy 100 and laid back class. I thought I’d be able to sit back and relax. This class would be an introduction to health practices in the medical field. I got to Sinton HIgh School, and at Sinton we have career paths that we choose when we are freshman. I ended up choosing the medical route. I always had an interest in being a surgeon or a doctor, but I never really thought I’d be able to go through with it. We started class and as soon as I walked into the room I was completely shocked by the posters. They were full of words I didn’t understand and pictures that made me think about transferring out of the class. A couple weeks went by and I began to fall in love with the program.
We started taking blood pressure on one and another and I was actually having fun doing work. We started looking at x-rays and mri’s, broken bones, open wounds, closed wounds, and even made our own posters. Day after day I looked forward to coming to class, overtime I became more interactive and participated in class. I wanted to learn. I got to learn more and more about the human body and how it functions. Let me tell you, there’s a lot of insane facts about your body. For example, did you know that the largest organ in the body is your skin? Many people would even put skin in the same box as an organ. My favorite fact, however, is your blood vessels can wrap around the Earth, they stretch over 60,000 miles. Being able to have such an amazing program has made me want to grow and learn more. I spent two years learning with Dr. Mitchell, she has been the greatest teacher that I have ever had. When I was about to finish my sophomore year she started encouraging me to join Health Science Classes sponsored by Del Mar.
I am now a junior and currently enrolled into the Del Mar college class. These classes will give me a total of 4 certifications, Electrocardiography(EKG), Phlebotomy, Patient Care Technician (PTC), and Medical Assistant (MA). I have my certification in EKG and I am working on getting my certification in Phlebotomy. I have just recently started volunteering for the Blood Bank in Corpus Christi, which basically means I attend blood drives and encourage people to donate their blood. When I turn 17 I will start donating platelets, used to help many patients with cancer. These platelets help blood clotting and affect bone marrow by providing more platelets, promoting the form of more. If it wasn’t for Dr. Mitchell, I would have never been able to find the career I will enjoy for the rest of my life.
