A New Chapter by Hailey - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a child, I detested reading. I had trouble understanding how people would do it for fun (and you have to admit, learning to read and learning to speak english are very different skills) that is, until my dad started reading to me at night. Harry Potter was the first series that I fell in love with and my love for reading has only increased from there.
Moving beyond high school is a big and stressful step in every person's life. I have been preparing to take this step for years now, but it seems that there is no real way to prepare for this change other than to take it for yourself. To some extent, moving on from high school is exciting. While it may not be a grand an adventure as the ones taken by the characters in the books I read about, I prefer to keep it that way. For example, while I love the Hunger Games, I do not envy the position Katniss was put in. Moving from high school to college seems like a much more manageable change.
I am excited to go to college and am planning on studying English Literature. Now that I understand the joy of reading and do it daily, I hope that by studying English, I can become a book editor with my degree. This way, I can continue pursuing my passion of reading and making a living off of what I truly love doing
