Franklin Roosevelt by Hailey - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

Throughout the years of the existence of America, we have been graced with 45 different men who had different views and agendas for this beautiful country. From fighting the war on terror, to fighting the Great Depression, each new president has shaped the United States into what we know today. If I had the opportunity to have dinner with any president, I would choose Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was president for 12 years and lead this nation through many obstacles with grace and dignity.
With the pressure of leading America out of one of the worst tragedies it has ever faced, FDR took control of the situation and led America in the right direction. It is for this reason that I would be honored to have dinner with the man who changed America. He had such insight and knowledge over the workings of America and was elected for four terms. This shows that the American people allied with him and his efforts as a leader and represents a father figure for the United States. With all eyes on him, he took the spotlight and performed. Some individuals criticized him and said he resembled a dictator and shouldn’t have been allowed to serve in office for so long. How did he deal with the accusations brought against him? Was he a man of great passions and let the comments slide off his back, or in secret did he fight the thoughts with anger and frustration? One major question I have, is how did he deal with his illness that hindered his ability to walk? People claim this made him look weak, but I believe it made him look human and humbled America. During this time, we looked invincible and wanted people to fear our very name and in a sense, we bought into this illusion. Having Mr. Roosevelt as president made many realize that we had our weaknesses and we because stronger in the long run.
With all this being said, I believe Franklin Roosevelt would be my man of choice to have dinner with. He is a symbol of great passion and honor. He is the emblem of power and dignity.
