The Learning Objectives to Life by Hailey - September 2017 Scholarship Essay

Every school, especially high school, has certain requirements you must pass in order to graduate. For example, all those english, science, math, and history classes are mandatory. Mandatory classes are typically know as the common core of education. Many do not know though that there are classes that everyone can take because they want too rather than because they have too. It's your choice. These are known as electives. Electives can range from an art class to an musical appreciation class all the way to cooking, or interior design. Electives allow a break time during a rigorous class schedule to just enjoy it. It allows blend, and diversity into a student workload.
My first ever elective was one you would of never thought of at first, Home Economics. Home Economics isn’t your typically elective class but taking it made me realize multiple aspects of education, whether it was in or out of school. Education is never limited to just school. There is many environments where you can positively enhance your intelligence, even if that’s at home. School is commonly know as a place where you evaluate logarithmic functions, compare and contrast a presidential legislative to a parliamentary one, and where you explain to the class why water is a polar molecule. The things you don't learn is how to cook your favorite meal of chicken parmesan, how to alter your prom dress with some needle and thread, and how to prepare a healthy diet.
Home economics gave me a new perspective on education. Not only do you need education from your basic classes to obtain all the requirements for a high school or college degree; you also need the basic skills of responsibility for the real world. This elective allowed me to learn things that some kids don’t exposed too often. Whether it because their parents do it all for them, or if they don’t have those people in their life to be able to teach them about it. You’re success doesn't mean anything unless you can take care of yourself. People aren’t always gonna be there to help you, and you have to be comfortable with the thought of being by yourself. Success comes with responsibility, and responsibility is a characteristic of value. It’s not something that people are born with, it’s a learned quality through the use of repetition.
