New Jersey by Hailey - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If the roles were reversed, the academic subject I would want to teach is history. Being one of my favorite subjects, I would want to expand the student’s minds with information about our world’s background. History is one of the most important subjects that anyone could ever learn about. The importance of knowing where your family has come from and what our ancestors have gone through is crucial to every single person. Students need history because we need to know what has helped shape us to be the beautiful world we are today. We also need to learn about the tragedies that have occurred, and how we can take precautions to make sure no similar events can ever happen again.

Not just history in the past, but I would teach my students about current events also. History is being made every single day right before our eyes. It is just as important, if not even more because what is happening now it molding our future. Especially at this time with the presidential election, the amount protests occurring, and the unfortunate, tragic terrorist attacks, this year is making history. Students need to be informed of what is happening in their world around them to know how to properly respond. It is so important to teach younger generations of our world’s history so they are aware of their past, present, and future.

If I was the teacher, I would make learning fun and enjoyable for the students. I would get them involved and learning and make sure they are actually engaging in the class. As a student, I know how difficult it is when you are sitting in a hard, plastic chair for about an hour long, just taking notes the whole time. I personally learn more when I am engaging with the topic, through either class discussions or hands on projects. I always learned better when my teacher is engaging with the class, provoking our minds into thinking about the topic. History is one of the best subjects to learn through discussions and projects. These kind of activities would make learning fun for the student. I would want the students to be inspired to learn and make them happy to walk into my class.

I have always been so invested in learning about history. It is fascinating to learn about the different cultures of people in different countries and the history of our world. That is why I would want to teach students history if the academic roles were reversed. I would want to pass on my excitement for learning about world history to other students and hopefully spark something in them that makes them interested in history. There is so much information for us to learn about so I would want to inform younger generations about the background and future of the world they are going to grow up in.
