Teachers Are the Reason by Haeli - February 2019 Scholarship Essay

The academic subject that inspires me the most is English. In my childhood years, I’ve always excelled in math but it wasn’t until my tenth grade year of high school that I realized my calling was English and writing. Although not everyone may like taking an English class, I have learned that for the teachers, it’s exciting almost everyday when you teach a piece of literature and this is one of the many reasons I want to become one.
Understanding what an author from the 18th century may be one of the most difficult task. Growing up you never really talk about how and why things are said the way that they are, but an English teacher can make it clear and help it become second nature to a person to see things differently. One sentence can be understood in a total of ten different perspectives and an English teacher can help you understand every single one of them.
In my tenth grade year of high school, I learned that when you get to a certain grade level, you have a chance to vocalize your opinion on a subject that you can’t vocalize at home. In English class, especially in high school, some topics taught leaves an open floor for discussion with my other classmates or even my teachers. Inside the classroom you have a chance to at least say something where people might actually listen and can take that chance to advocate. Outside the classroom it has helped me be more confident when it comes to my opinion and to not be afraid especially when I’m the leader.
That’s why my education matters to me. Growing up I’ve always had high expectations for myself and they got higher and higher in high school. College will definitely be a roller-coaster but I plan on gaining an internship where I can gain experience teaching, earning my teaching credentials as soon as possible, working a part-time job on campus, and even working on my first book so I can gain better knowledge on publishing. In college I hope that even if I do decide to change my major, I’ll be happy and living the life I dreamed of as a child. Independent, strong, and living my best life the way I dreamed to live it.
