Communication is Key by Gyzelle - August 2015 Scholarship Essay

An important life skill any successful person contains is the ability to communicate effectively. As this skill can improve anyone’s quality of life, it is essential that the subject communication be included to American high school curriculum. Once high school students develop communication skills, not only will it help them in their personal lives, but also with their professional life. Their understanding of communication in everyday life will expand, and students will be able to properly present and express their ideas, feelings, and judgment.

Offering communication classes to students will give them the chance to learn how to profoundly impact and influence their listeners by practicing their presentation and giving speeches. As these students give speeches to their peers, they will be able to practice maintaining good eye contact and establish a diverse vocabulary. As this skill should not be ignored, it is key in order to communicate information correctly, and as intended. As it is acceptable to oppose with the beliefs or opinions articulated by others, these classes will help students develop critical thinking skills and behaviors that are important for public debating and all aspects of argumentation.

Students will be able to present their ideas appropriately and listen adequately. Communicating effectively is a fundamental skill that every employer looks for. Furthermore, it is vital that communication classes are added to the American high school curriculum in order to help students succeed in the future.
