I'm Ready by Gwen - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

Growing up with my dad being a farmer, I spent a lot of time on the farm with him. I helped him with the cows and pigs and learned what it took to have a career in agriculture. I learned that every day as a farmer something unexpected could happen, no day was the same as the last. This intrigued me and I wanted a job like my dad’s. One where I woke up in the morning not knowing what the day will have for me. As I grew older, I began thinking about life after high school and what I wanted my career to be. Because I had a passion for helping animals I decided that being a vet would provide me with a happy and full life.
As a junior in high school, I still believed vet was the way to go, that is until online college courses became an opportunity for me. At my high school, we are given the chance to take free, online DMACC courses to prepare us for college. So I decided I wanted to take a Medical Terminology class, which would help me towards my degree in Veterinary Sciences. But I also took Sports Nutrition just to see if that might be something I’m interested in. After that semester, those classes opened my eyes to all these other fields colleges had to offer. I was excited to see that all these different areas of study were engaging to me. But I was also scared because now, after years of certainty, I was unsure of what I was going to go to school after high school.
Even now, a year later I’m still on the same boat, with college just around the corner. But now I see it through a different perspective. Because most people going into college “undecided” would be scared, but I’ve grown to accept my uncertainty. Which is why my senior quote would be, “I may be unsure, but that doesn’t mean I’m not ready.” This quote to me means, that unlike most people my age I’m not 100% sure of my future plans. That doesn’t mean I won’t be as successful as the ones who are decided on their majors. For example, I read that as many as 50 to 75% of all undergraduate students change majors at least one time before earning a degree. Meaning that almost all college students change their majors, no matter how certain they may be for their future.
Yes, I’m a senior in high school with around one semester left until college, still undecided on my major. But at least I’m not just going to find a career that pays well and just settle. I’m determined to find a career path that I’m truly passionate about. I want to go to work every day without it even feeling like work. I want to love what I do while also helping others. Even if that does mean taking a little longer to figure out my perfect career, I’m ready for that challenge. So just remember I may be unsure but that doesn’t mean I’m not ready.
