Why I Dream to be a Nurse by Gretchen - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
Although my educational career goals are very similar to many students across the country and within my university, my life goals completely vary from the rest. Currently, I am pursuing a nursing degree at Baker University in Baldwin City, KS. I've wanted to go into the medical field ever since I can remember being asked "what do you want to be when you grow up?" At first, I wanted to be a doctor, but as I grew older and proceeded through high school, I realized that I would quickly become overwhelmed and intimidated by going to med school and wanted to be able to interact with patients rather than just spend a small amount of time with them. I chose to pursue this field of study at Baker University because of how highly accredited the School of Nursing is, and how much I loved the environment of the campus in general. Within my career, my goal is to be able to impact at least one person's life in my occupation. I am trying to keep an open mind about what field of nursing I would like to work in and am excited to do rotations during nursing school that will help me decide and become more comfortable within them. Like most future nurses, I would love to work with children, but I also have recognized that my emotions are very strong, and I would be disappointed if I let them get in the way of succeeding in the medical field. Due to my recognition of those feelings, I speculate that I will extremely enjoy working in the fast-paced emergency room or in a doctor's office, to ensure that I am able to provide the most professional environment that I can, and be a shoulder to lean on for patients. A nursing degree will help me achieve my goals of impacting lives because something new will happen every day. As a nurse, there are so many different people that I will meet and be able to connect with on a deeper level. I am hoping that the Baker School of Nursing will prepare me with not only the knowledge to receive a BSN, but also will provide me with the tools I need to interact with many different types of people in every walk of life that may arise. Going to a smaller school has been difficult, due to the higher expectations that come with it, but I can't imagine where life would take me if I hadn't of chosen Baker, and I can't wait to see what happens when I graduate! Although I haven't even applied to nursing school yet (not until September), I have been preparing myself through earning a great GPA, volunteering, and planning out classes specifically to keep me on track to be accepted. I cannot wait until I get to wear scrubs every day and work in an environment that will not only keep me on my toes but bring something new every day.
