Pursuit of Happiness by Gracelyn - December 2015 Scholarship Essay
If this question was posed to me during my elementary years (as it often was), my answers would have been as varied and unrelated as could be. I wanted to be a veterinarian, fireman, a professional athlete, and every other imaginable career in between. These careers, I was sure, would be fun for the rest of my life. Now, I like to believe that I’ve grown up a substantial amount, and I realize that my job needs to be sustaining as well as interesting. Bills can’t be paid with fun.
However, my unique education has provided me with a unique outlook on life. I attend a very small, intimate high school where the teachers don’t have much to gain by teaching. This is to say, their salaries and benefits tantamount to roughly a hill of beans. One might inquire, why do they teach? The answer is simple: Their jobs make them happy. My teachers enjoy what they do, and their love of it is apparent through their lectures and lessons.
Going through high school and watching all of my teachers love their livelihoods has had an unimaginable effect on me. I currently plan on going to a small, private university near my hometown when I graduate in May of 2016, and my major has changed approximately a million times since August. I may not know exactly what my plan post-graduation is, but watching my teachers love their profession has led me to have one goal for my future: In ten years, I hope to be happy.
