The Purpose of Education by Grace - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
From our very first day of kindergarten all the way to adulthood, we have all had parents, teachers, and other various individuals in our lives tell us multiple times that it is important that we get our education. It is important to recognize that education is an essential aspect of one’s life, but it is even more important to be aware of the purpose of education and the reasons behind why people are constantly told to focus on getting an education. Education has an endless list of purposes, but the main purpose of education is to spread knowledge among students so that they have the ability to direct their lives into the directions they choose and become the people they want to be.
Education starts with teaching young students basic knowledge, such as reading, writing, and counting. They are also taught how to follow directions, how to differentiate between right and wrong, how to work with others, and other basic human skills that they will need for the rest of their lives. As these students grow older, the contents of the education they are receiving become more advanced and challenging to match their growing ability to understand more complex subjects. Thanks to education, students are constantly learning and gaining new knowledge and skills every single day.
Moreover, being educated allows students to have a choice in the direction in which their lives are headed. Education provides them with the opportunity to choose their career and what they want to accomplish in life. Starting at a young age, students are constantly being encouraged to think about what they want to be when they grow up. A plan for the future is essential to ensuring a successful life. With the large variety of subjects that education provides, students are able to figure out what their strengths and weaknesses are, as well as their likes and dislikes, which is critical when deciding what would be the best suited career for the future.
Lastly, education allows students to discover who they truly are, form their own opinions and freely express themselves. Education ensures that students will grow up to be leaders who have their own original thoughts and ideas instead of followers who only do what others are doing. They can be their own person who makes their own decisions and is responsible for their own choices, not someone who lets others make decisions for them. Education allows students to learn and grow and shape themselves into the people that they truly want to become.
Education is an essential aspect of every person’s life. From kindergarten to adulthood, students are constantly reminded by parents, teachers, and other individuals that it is important for them to get their education. Although education has many different purposes, the main purpose is to spread knowledge among students so that they have the ability to maneuver their lives into the directions they choose and transform into the people they want to be.
