Always Keep Learning by Grace - September 2024 Scholarship Essay
Have you ever sat in a classroom trying to understand what you are learning, but just can't get a grip? The problem could be that your learning style does not align with how the instructor is teaching. There are four common learning styles that individuals can identify with- kinesthetic, auditory, reading/writing, and visual.
After spending years of my life in different classroom environments, with different teachers, I have found that I learn best through music and acting. I am a musical person, if someone makes a song about something, take the States song for example, I will pick it up. I have always been quick to learn melodies after only a few times of listening to a song.
I also learn through acting stories out. In my advanced Sophomore English class two years ago, we did lots of this sort of thing. My teacher would ask us to make a talk show, or a skit about the literature we were reading. This was always helpful because I would have to study up in order to have my facts right and present them correctly. It was fun to write scripts, add costumes, and props to make our assignments come to life. Watching my peers perform was also very informative. It's easier for me to remember well written or funny lines out of plays and movies, rather than books.
Something that I am currently learning outside of school is the paino. I am trying to sharpen my musical abilities and playing the piano is going to help me with that. I ask lots of questions, and ask my piano teacher to play my music first so I can get a gist of what it is supposed to sound like. She is very helpful and kind. She helps me learn in a way that I need to, she knows book work isn't going to get me very far.
Something else I am learning outside of school are things in my religion. I seem to always learn something new about my Savior and his gospel. I learn through hymns and youth music about who he is and what he means to me. I also learn best when my Seminary teacher does object lessons and has us participate in those. I remember those kinds of lessons more than the ones where he talks at us. Figuring out how I learn made me realize that I want to help others find the way they learn. I am going to pursue English Education so that I can give students a different perspective on learning and show them that is isn't as intimidating as it seems. Finding the way you learn is going to help you, you're peers, and your teachers. You just have to be ready to try new things.
