Entering the Media World by Grace - January 2023 Scholarship Essay

The cursor hovered over the checkbox: my last schedule decision for sophomore year. As I clicked the option for TV/Film I, the river of my life forever changed. The next three years were filled with late nights staring at a screen, editing a hype video or feature story for class. After years of hard work, I was chosen to be producer of the school’s newscast, and I once again fell in love with the fast-paced, idea-pitching, constant stream of ideas that was the media industry. It allowed me to explore paths of conflict and sides of stories I otherwise would never have been able to access.
Some type of media class must be accessible for every student in the country, whether it be as simple as a newspaper course or as complex as a broadcasting course. To work with other students on national and local news is unlike any other experience, as you are truly showcasing your creative and vulnerable side in such a short amount of time. Who will you interview? How will you edit? In these split-second decisions, the course of the video or stream is immediately change, which just puts into perspective how fast life around us can change in general.
