In my mind, a gap year is not just a period of waiting - it is a time to take advantage of! I consider a gap year a good opportunity to stock up on all the resources, funds, and goals that one can in order to prepare for the return to school. In my own experience with gap years, I have researched what I can about the schools and degrees that interested me, and I have nailed down my game plan. I have pursued jobs to save money for tuition and avoid debt – and in doing so found that working is an education in and of itself that helped me decide what I wanted – or didn’t want! – in my own career.

I personally did not know what field of study I wanted to pursue when I graduated high school. Having a gap year really helped me figure out what I hoped for in life and what next steps I needed to take. I’m glad I had an opportunity to take a gap year, and I would encourage any other student who takes one to use it to its fullest potential. I would ask students not to believe the idea that a gap year is a waste of time, but instead take the reins and use the year as an exciting journey of self-discovery!
