Focus on the Vision by Grace - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

Welcome to high school! You are embarking on quite the journey. High school is the time of your life when you will discover more about yourself, learn how to become a well functioning adult, and make friendships and memories that you will cherish for the rest of your life. As fun as this all will be, high school also contains many moments that have the ability to define what opportunities will open up to you in college and beyond. Go on a road trip with your best friends, talk on the phone until 2 am, try dating, dance like you don’t have a care in the world, but whatever you do, don’t lose your focus on your vision for the future. Don’t get me wrong, high school is more work than you have probably ever done in your life, but there are ways to make it easier and more manageable.

I challenge you to take a few minutes to contemplate why doing well in high school is important to you. Create a mental vision of your future success: whatever that looks like for you. My vision is to become a life flight nurse and save lives. I clearly see myself stepping out of a helicopter in a blue jumpsuit and white helmet, running towards the scene of an emergency, confident in my medical knowledge and ability to help whatever patient I may find ahead. This vision is the thing that gave me the strength to stay up late studying and power through essays that seemed like they would never end.

Don’t let tests, essays, or standardized tests psych you out, ask for help when you need it, and don’t forget to have fun. I’m proud of you for being here. You’ve got this.
