The Value of Time by Grace - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

Time, according to the Oxford dictionary, is defined as the indefinite continued progress of existence and events in the past, present and future regarded as a whole. It is one of the only parts of life that will never stop, and it is difficult to not get left behind. One of the hardest parts of being a high school student is using your time wisely and not being led astray from your goals. I advise incoming freshman to not waste their time on anyone or anything.
In high school, you will meet many people who are not worth your time. Some people’s goals are only to defer others from their paths, and it is difficult to find people who truly wish for others to succeed. Steve Jobs once said, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” This was one of the hardest things I had to learn in high school; there are people that do not deserve your friendship, and sometimes you have to let people go. As high school progresses, classes get harder and you have to use your time wisely. You should never spend your time trying to fix others problems when they refuse to do it themselves. If incoming students can learn this lesson early, then they will perform so much better in school.
Another part of being a high school student it using your time wisely inside and outside of school. Even though it is hard to do, students should always do as much as they can in class to save time after school. I struggled with procrastination many times during my high school career, but I eventually learned that if I do everything I can inside this classroom, it makes my life outside the classroom so much easier. If you know you have to study for a test, don’t wait until it’s late at night to open your notes. You can study for a short time over the span of few days instead of studying for hours all in one night. If you try to cram a lot of learning to one night, it will only result in being tired the next day and you will forget some of the information. Incoming students should find study methods that work well for them, and try their hardest in all of their classes.
My biggest piece of advice for incoming high school students is to not waste their time on people who don’t deserve it, and to instead use their time on important subjects like school. Using your time wisely is difficult, but as long as you try your best, it will all work out. Time is such a valuable thing to have, so don’t spend it on doing things that will not benefit you in the future.
