NOT a Morning Person!!! by Grace - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

I have always seen myself as a night owl. Ever since I was young, getting up in the morning has been a difficult task. I will cover my head with a pillow, hit snooze, or even attempt to ignore that agonizing beeping that is trying to get me up in the morning. At nighttime, however, I can stay up for hours and hours with no problem at all. Unfortunately, those late nighters make the next morning even more painful.
I find the late hours of the night to be more productive because of the silence. My family has all gone to sleep and the world is quiet. There is no clicking of the dog's nails on the tile floors, no screaming at video games from my brother, and no sizzling of food on the stove. As someone who is easily distracted by the smallest squeak or the slightest motion, complete and utter silence allows me to focus, and in my house, the morning is not even the slightest bit quiet.
There are studies that state that teenage students would function better if they were to attend school from the late morning to early evening rather than the normal eight to three schedule that most schools follow. I have always found this to be a good way of running the school system in my opinion. This would allow students to sleep in slightly longer as many would prefer to do, as well as increasing focus in the classroom. I can say from personal experience that I am more focused once ten am passes than I am at eight am when my current classes begin. I also function much more when I sleep into the mid-morning (no matter how late I went to sleep).
Morning just is not my ideal time to do anything. I am groggy and usually not happy about getting up. My mind is more focused on going back to bed than trying to do anything productive. At night, once I have been up and doing things for a full day, I find it relaxing to look out my window at the stars for a few minutes then get down to business.
