Thinking Outside the Box by Grace - October 2018 Scholarship Essay

The human brain is a marvelous thing. Composed of billions of neurons sequencing and processing emotions, senses, and involuntary movements all at once, the complex relationship between the mind and the outside world is truly astonishing. Psychologists and economists have extremely difficult jobs because of the way the human mind continuously fluctuates. The brain is divided into two hemispheres; the left and the right. The left hemisphere is responsible for logic and linear thinking, while the right hemisphere is responsible for creativity and imagination. When you're solving a math problem, it is the left hemisphere that tells you how to do it in the manner you were taught. It is the right hemisphere that creates a new, hopefully easier way of solving it.
Thinking outside the box is to develop an unconventional way of thinking. The creativity required to do so is a crucial aspect to one's success in today's constantly changing society. Employers, admission representatives, and even teachers all seek out individuals with the ability to think outside the box, as it greatly contributes to the prosperity of their business. Imagination and innovation shows interest, care, and concern in that field of work. The search for improvement is a rapidly evolving game in today's society, and those in authority need to hire and admit those who will bring new plans, designs, or visions to help them stay ahead of that game. While this is an important aspect to all career fields, it is particularly significant to me because, as a nursing major, I will soon be faced with a multitude of cases and patients that will require me to generate alternative procedures or methods of care unique to the patient in order to do my job efficiently.
No two human brains are exactly the same; everyone's brain and body has the potential to react differently to certain treatments that doctors and nurses may have relied on in the past. This is why there is a constant demand for innovators in the medical field. Here, the phrase 'thinking outside the box' means generating contemporary ideas based off of good intentions. It is an essential facet to my success as a future nurse. I made the decision to attend nursing school because I have the desire to be of service to those who need it. I believe I am a natural caregiver, and becoming a nurse is the best way I believe I can share my gift with the world. Becoming a successful nurse does not rely on position titles or salary numbers. Becoming a successful nurse relies on one's ability to think outside the box and provide the best possible care for the patient.
