Importance of the Human Body by Grace - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If the roles between my teachers and I were reversed I would choose to teach anatomy and physiology. As a future pre-dental student, I am fascinated with the human body, especially teeth. I have always thrived in science courses and learned so much with many great teachers. I could give hour-long lectures about the structures of our integumentary system or how joints function. Without the knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, people would not be provided with the great health and emergency care that hospitals have to offer. I would teach anatomy because it is the subject I am the most knowledgable in, it is essential to human survival due to health care, and it is important to know why our bodies are structured and function the way they do.
Anatomy and physiology is a subject of memorization, because of this memorization I could give lectures and lessons about the human body. Going through my anatomy course, I would lecture my family once or twice a week about the material I knew would be on the test; this method of studying allowed my family and me to learn the material and improved my grade. Because of this, I have lectures written on the topic that I could use to teach my teachers. I would lecture on the six major functions of bones, the synovial joint which allows the body to freely move in many ways, and the structures and functions of the four types of tissue that make up the human body. Along with these valuable lessons, I could lecture on many more topics; however, I believe the most valuable lesson to teach in anatomy is the medical terminology such as the anterior and posterior view of the anatomical position.
A knowledge of anatomy and physiology can limit the use of expensive diagnosis techniques. For example, the knowledge the subject gives doctors can help them diagnose an issue instead of having to use expensive technology to order an MRI or expensive laboratory test. Instead of these forms, a doctor could use hands-on techniques if the doctor is experienced. However, it is understandable that some medical needs require MRI's and other modern technology. The knowledge of anatomy allows our health care systems to achieve many wonderful things such as surgery. Because of the medical terminology taught in anatomy, surgeons can understand each other and know where exactly to preform incisions. An example of this would be when a surgeon says "The cut should be frontal on the patients acromial". This will not make sense to a person who has not studied anatomy, but to a person with knowledge of anatomy this statement would mean the cut will take place on the shoulder in a horizontal direction.
The human body is a very complex structure that needs care. Knowing how our bodies function is important to keep our bodies healthy and in shape. The United States obesity rate is excessively high currently; however, I believe if people knew what obesity does to their body they would eat healthier and exercise more frequently. Eating unhealthy can cause many unwanted diseases and complications in our body, such as gouty arthritis or diabetes. There are many illnesses people could avoid simply by taking better care of themselves. For this reason, anatomy should be taught so people can see what their actions are doing to their bodies. Smoking is a frequently talked about subject in the world today, smokers know what they are doing can kill them, but most do not understand the process their cells undergo when smoking. This knowledge might stop smokers from destroying not only their bodies, but also the environment.
I would teach anatomy and physiology for many reasons. The human body is filled with many systems and little pieces that make up a structure. This subject should be required for all students to take; however, at my school it is not. To understand our bodies is a gift that many overlook. This everyday knowledge saves lives and betters people. This is the reason I would chose anatomy to teach my teachers if our roles were reversed. Anatomy is the most interesting subject I studied in high school, but it is also one of the most useful subjects I studied. Without anatomy our hospitals would not be able to operate as efficiently as they do, and less people would be saved. All in all, anatomy is a subject essential to life.
