Passion for education by Glenna - July 2019 Scholarship Essay
According to the 5b definition in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, passion is an emotion characterized by a strong liking or desire for, or devotion to some activity, object, or concept (Merriam-Webster 5b). In my eyes, passion is just that; a dedication and devotion to something. Academic education is what I focus most of my time, therefore I am very familiar with having a passion towards it, although I consider education to be the learning of any new skill or knowledge. For example, whenever someone begins a sport that they have never played at a young age, they improve their skills constantly, and sometimes even become professional athletes. From an academic standpoint, however, learning is the driving force. I feel that I could study something for hours and still manage to discover something I did not know beforehand. My own dedication is seemingly tireless, meaning that I give all of my time, and still wish that I had gotten more done. For some, learning is an obstacle and the passion comes in the form of frustration. Those people persevere despite challenges, whatever those challenges may be, they do not decide one’s fate.
One of my very close friends struggles with dyslexia, and has since we began school, so I saw what it looks like for her to be so utterly frustrated whenever she could not understand or calculate something. In my opinion, learning disabilities are one of the hardest things to battle in early education because children have a tendency to give up on what does not come easily to them, but this fact just makes the people who face them that much more amazing. Passion for education is being tired of doing something, but continuing anyways. It is the feeling of gratification experienced whenever the dedication pays off, even in small ways. It is remaining humble and understanding that everyone has ways to improve, no matter how fast, or intelligent. It is the feeling one gets after turning in an assignment that was done to the very best of their ability, or after they look down to see that they shaved a second or two off of their mile time. I believe that having a passion towards education is a crucial step in achieving one’s goals, whether that passion reveals itself through pertinacious study tactics for exams and classes, inexhaustible practice on a field or a court, indefatigable repetitions of musical programs, or asking for help in a skill when it is needed.
