Teaching English by Gizelle - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

As a student, many of us would switch roles and become a teacher to give the homework that we got or the torture we had, but if the roles were reversed I would teach English. Not to give essays or homework or anything like that, but because I could teach the universal language and literacy in my own way. Every teacher that I’ve had in English taught in an exotic way. Some would just make us read and some would show the students a deeper meaning in the reading. Every single one of my English teachers since the 6th grade have been unique and have brought English to my knowledge in a different way, so if the roles were reversed I would teach English because as a teacher I would do the same as well.
If I were an English teacher I would be unique like all my other teachers I have had before. I wouldn’t go too fast or too slow but just enough so that everyone in my class is satisfied. English is not one of my best subjects, but if I taught it I would not let the students make the mistakes I did when I was in English. If I could pick a grade level to teach at it would be 8th Grade English. I would teach 8th Grade English because that is when I really started learning about literature. This is when you start teaching students that English isn’t just language, punctuation and writing. You lean that it includes reading and other types of literature like movies, music, and shows. Becoming an 8th Grade English Teacher would be extravagant because it would be opening their minds and showing what real “english” is like.
Reversing roles and becoming an English teacher does not mean that I would want to give people essays, novels and books to read, or giving lots of homework. It just means that I would want to open a student’s mind to a new way in learning a subject. To be an English teacher you should be unique, fun and different, which was most of how my English teachers were. For that reason I would make a wonderful English teacher and I would love doing it as well.
