Growing older, we set expectations and standards for ourselves in which we don’t even realize we do so. As our college applications are going to be submitted soon, we grow even more nervous to come face to face with reality. An expectation I have set for myself this year is maintaining a good GPA to get accepted into a Cal State or UC, and even applying out of state. In order for me to accomplish this goal, I have to stay on top of my work for all my classes and manage my time efficiently, which would require me to put homework or anything school related first.
Everyone is different when it comes to beliefs, values, morals, and ethics. We all believe in different approaches in which we hope will help us on the road to being successful. Personally, I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason and dwelling on past situations will only bring you down. In order to be successful, one will someones encounter being told no and being rejected, this is when we should use that to full advantage and have a positive mindset, at the end of the day only we know what we are capable of accomplishing. For example, if the university of our dreams decided to reject us for whatever reason, one should look on the bright side, maybe the school wasn’t fit for us in the first place and maybe their school doesn’t precisely focus on what we want to major in.
A big part in growing up has to do with finding ourselves and finding out what we’re good at. Unlike a few high schools, our high school varies different sports in which we have options to chose from. I never really got the chance to get involved in any sports because I know what I can handle and I wouldn’t be able to juggle both school and a hobby. Although I might have not gotten involved, an interest I’ve always had is dancing. Whether it’s just when I have my earphones and I’m dancing just for fun, I enjoy it very much because it’s a form of expressing myself.
College being right around the corner, knowing what we want to do for the future comes about and knowing what we want to do for the rest for our lives is a question we begin to ask ourselves. Studies show that 85% of students change their major by their sophomore year. A goal I hope to accomplish while studying in the nearby future is becoming a registered nurse, what influenced me to choose this career is while my father got sick a few years ago, the registered nurse that attended him had a talk with me about how much she enjoyed her job and helping new patients every day, this was something I knew I wanted to do. Helping and making people laugh has always been a passion of mine, I believe this career suits me perfectly.
A big part of growing up usually has to do with how well we get to know ourselves and what we’re good at and what we can do to change to better ourselves. A bad habit I have always endured is not knowing how to manage my time in an efficient manner. There’s situations that I’ve gotten put in, getting assigned homework for a certain period of time and I’ll leave it down to the last couple of days which isn’t convenient because I didn’t spend as much time on the assignment like I should’ve. A weakness I’ve also discovered is that I get distracted very easily, throwing me off from whatever I’m doing. In order to become successful in life bad habits and weaknesses we obtain must be broken, which is what I’ll be working on for the remainder of the school year to better myself.
Happiness is something we choose, not just naturally develop. There’s an endless amount of things which bring me a tremendous amount of happiness, and motivate me on becoming a better version of myself. There’s no doubt that there’s a huge amount of people out in the world struggling for whatever reason, some in which didn’t get the opportunity to get the education and advantage us adolescents get nowadays. Coming from a middle class family, I grew to appreciate everything I have and continue to inspire me everyday to succeed one day so I can make my parents proud and give them the world because they deserve it.
As human beings we all grow up with different backgrounds and struggles, which make us all unique. Growing up is inevitable and makes us realize a lot about ourselves that we may have not known before. We learn our strengths and weaknesses, and usually work to better ourselves in whatever way is possible. We know ourselves more than anyone, and for this reason we should set goals and expectations to always strive for more because there will always be room for improvement.
