Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? by Gian Kaiser - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

Tragedy and death can lead to fear. However, tragedy and death could also lead to heartbreaks. I would love to go on a dinner with William Shakespeare. Not because I want to ask how he was able to create dramatic plays that lead to tears and laughter, but to ask him of how cold his heart has been.

Throughout my time in High School I have noticed that heartbreaks occurs spontaneously. It is an expression that is not picked but rather, given to. Whether it’s not being able to make the top ten of your school, not being able to make the basketball team or even not being with your love anymore, heartbreaks leaves scars that never heal. Even if that love was just a dream. The heart is suppose to feel joy but why does it feel pain? William Shakespeare knew that and he used that feeling of heartbreak to make others have an idea of how a little pain can ache the heart. However, you don’t know what heartbreak is until you feel it. The worse the heart is broken the colder and the more mysterious it gets. I’ve always wanted to ask William Shakespeare of what his biggest heartbreak is. Although I might get the idea of what it could be, I will never understand the tragedy it brought to him because all hearts have different demands of being felt. How can I even understand his heart if I couldn’t even understand mine?

The only person that can truly understand my heart is the love of my life. It’s funny because we all often dream of how perfect it would be for our heart to be felt but in reality, a heart’s scar, can only be healed by it’s own. It can also be overcome. Deep down William Shakespeare was trying to hide some kind of pain and I would love to at least get an idea of it from his own words. Because a creative heart comes from being torn down. Dreams don’t get stronger because of glory but of pain.
