Choosing Correctly by Gerardo - September 2022 Scholarship Essay

Life is full of tough choices which either make or break an individual. No one fully understands why humans must make these choices, but they have always existed. Even great philosophers, like Plato, have pondered over why humanity is affected by these unknown circumstances that dominate all aspects of life. No one can outrun or hide from making a choice, so I have found that it is easier to always choose in your favor because, no matter what, every choice you make will have consequences that could either help you or destroy you. This advice is the only thing that my past self needs in order to survive this unpredictable world.

The first major choice that changed my life forever, ironically, was not made by me. My Father and mother believed that it was wise to legally immigrate my family from Mexico to the United States. I was 5 years old when this drastic choice was made, and I was under the impression that we were just taking a family vacation. Well, this vacation has lasted for more than 10 years. Aren’t I lucky?

In plain sight, I am because I have made very loyal friends who are like my second family, and I had the privilege to learn a second language that has the power to connect me with more than 50 percent of the business world. Yet, this choice of moving to the United States has made me choose between being a good student who is dedicated to school or spending quality time with those I love the most. Well, I made the foolish mistake of choosing to be a good, dedicated student and I have spent most, if not all, of my weekends finishing my AP homework. What hurts me the most about choosing school over family is that my mother suffered from a stroke, and I was more worried about my AP English test score.

So, choosing in your favor is the best advice I could offer to my past self because maybe that is the only way I might be able to spend more time with my family before the worst comes. I truly wish that in the future, after I am done with school, I will be able to spend all that quality time with my family that I missed for focusing on my schoolwork.
