My motivation: Nursing by Geoffrey - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

While working as a CNA, I have witnessed and experienced the profound impact that healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, have on individuals and their families. Whether its clinical care expertise, emotional support, patient education, or advocacy, nurses play a multifaceted role in improving patient outcomes, enhancing quality of life, and promoting holistic well-being. Witnessing firsthand the impactful contributions nurses make on a daily basis has solidified my dream to pursue a career in nursing, driven by the desire to make a meaningful and lasting impact in people's lives. Pursuing my career motivates me academically.

Nurses wield the ability to positively or negatively impact individuals' lives. As a nurse, my objective is to employ compassion, empathy, and professionalism in all interactions with patients and their families.. Through observing nurses interactions with patients, I've come to understand that patient aggression often stem from pain or frustration from their situation, rather than being indicative of their true character. Nurses often see patients on the worst day or most challenging period of their lives, and empathy and compassion is needed in these moments in order to diffuse the situation and make the patients feel heard, understood, and safe.

One of the key impacts I hope to make as a nurse is to advocate for patient rights and promote health equity regardless of race, background, income, or religion. In my role, I see it as my responsibility to serve as a voice for those who may lack the means or opportunity to advocate for themselves. This entails actively listening to their concerns, understanding their unique circumstances, and advocating on their behalf to ensure they receive the quality, culturally competent care and support they deserve. I aim to contribute towards building a healthcare system that is truly accessible and inclusive for all, ultimately working towards improving health outcomes and overall well-being for all individuals and communities alike.

In my nursing career, I aspire to not only fulfill my responsibilities as a caregiver to patients but also to serve as a pillar of support and positivity for my fellow colleagues within the healthcare community. While the healthcare field can sometimes be emotionally taxing, I aim to bring a sense of encouragement. By lending a listening ear and prioritizing a collaborative atmosphere, I aim to uplift spirits and cultivate a sense of unity among team members. I also aim to be a dependable nurse that is an approachable resource for both patients and colleagues alike. Whether it's lending a helping hand during a difficult procedure, providing guidance on complex medical cases, or simply offering a sympathetic ear to listen to concerns, I aim to be someone whom others can rely on in times of need.

By embodying these values, I hope to contribute to the nursing profession and use my education to serve the people around me. My aspiration is to bring tangible benefits to the lives of every individual—whether patient or colleague—with whom I interact, regardless of the scale of the impact. By upholding these values, I endeavor to leave a lasting imprint on the individuals and communities I encounter.
