A single class, changed everything by Geoff - June 2019 Scholarship Essay
During the summer of 2017, I threw myself back into college and register myself to take a math class after receiving a kidney transplant. I've waited four years to go back to college: I didn't have enough energy to go back to school while I was going to dialysis treatments every other day, so my education had to be put on hold until I received a transplant.
After I received my kidney transplant, I was told I could go back to college, in doing so, I registered into a photo class along with my math class to start completing my requirements to earn an AA degree. I chose Photo 110, which was the very first photo class of the photography program, I figured I needed to learn how to use my camera that I got for Christmas that year and I didn’t know how to use it besides point and shoot. In Photo 110 at Everett Community College, my professor was a hilarious guy and made our projects not seem like homework, but more like an adventure. The professor loved his job, every student in my class respected his work and everything that we’ve learned to further our skills in our studies. During that first quarter of photography, I’ve grown to love and really appreciated the art of photography all because I had an amazing professor, Professor Wallen. So much that I kept taking the next levels of photography classes over the course of two years because Professor Wallen kept telling me, I wont regret it. I’m now at the end of the advanced photography program and made photography as my major, I absolutely loved taking photographs and making beautiful works of art that I've produced over the past two years. I’m very thankful I chosen Photo 110 with that one particular Professor during summer quarter, never regretted it.
Looking forward to going to a four-year photo Institute to continue my education in Photography, making a career out of my degree and working in the photography world.
Till this day, I always run into my professor at school and always wonder how I'm doing, loves my work and how much I've grown from that very first photo class. I thank him all the time and opening my eyes of how talented I am, a gift that I'll never lose.
