Never Ending Mathematics by Geoff - September 2018 Scholarship Essay
I’m currently working towards my Master’s degree, to be able to teach Mathematics to higher education students. In twenty-five years from now, I see myself pursuing deeply involved in mathematics, the knowledge of mathematics is endless, so many unsolved equations waiting to be solved. I’ve come a long way to get myself back into college, after a near life-threating disease, five years of battling kidney and liver disease; not to mention re-learning how to walk again after I finally was released from the hospital. My life wasn't going to be the same anymore, however, I wasn’t going to make any more excuses for why I couldn’t finish college. A lot of people look up to me and if I can make it, so can they.
I’ve always had a passion for becoming a teacher in the mathematics world but never been given the chance, until now. I just recently received my AA diploma, it wasn’t easy but knowing I’m a third of the way done to my Master’s. Makes me want to push harder to my goal, to stand there in a room full of students waiting to hear my lectures and obtain as much knowledge as possible. My ultimate goal is to try to change the stereotype that mathematics isn’t difficult, just needs a little practice and a lot of patience. Anyone can learn the reasoning why mathematics is important in day to day routines. I want to show mathematics is not difficult but takes discipline for strong-minded students that want to pursue in advance mathematics. Hopefully one day, one of my future students will unlock unsolved equations that could further advance our mathematics education.
After twenty-five years from now, planning to at least have a job teaching what I love, mathematics. I've always wanted to teach, once I land my dream job, I plan to stick with it for a long as I can. I'm excited that I'm comfortable with my career path knowing I can work in the area for as long as I want, and plan on still teaching beyond when I'm supposed to retire.
