Oh That's Major! by Genesis - May 2023 Scholarship Essay

Choosing a major is a crucial decision that sets the tone for the rest of one's academic and professional life. For me, the decision to major in nursing was an easy one. I have always been drawn to the field of healthcare, and nursing, in particular, is a career that resonates with my values and personal aspirations.

My interest in nursing started at a young age when I witnessed the compassion and care given to my grandmother by her nurses during a hospital stay. I was struck by how much of an impact they had on my grandmother's well-being, both physically and emotionally. Their kind and empathetic care made a difficult time more bearable for my grandmother and our family. That experience left a lasting impression on me, and from then on, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in nursing.

As I started exploring the nursing field more deeply, I became fascinated by the diversity of roles and opportunities that nursing offers. Nurses can work in a wide range of settings, from hospitals and clinics to schools and community health centers. They can specialize in different areas, such as pediatrics, mental health, critical care, and oncology. The flexibility and variety that nursing provides is appealing to me as I see it as a career that can evolve and grow with me over time.

Furthermore, nursing is a field that aligns with my values and personal aspirations. I believe that healthcare is a fundamental human right, and I want to contribute to making it more equitable and accessible for all individuals, regardless of their socio-economic status. Nursing's holistic approach to patient care, which encompasses physical, emotional, and social well-being, aligns with my belief that healthcare should be patient-centered and address the whole person, not just their medical conditions. I want to be part of a profession that values and prioritizes patient advocacy, education, and empowerment, and nursing embodies those values.

In addition to the above reasons, I also chose nursing because of the numerous opportunities for professional and personal growth. Nursing provides a solid foundation of knowledge and skills, but it also offers ongoing opportunities for learning and development. Whether it's pursuing advanced degrees, certifications, or specializations, nursing allows for continuous learning and growth. Furthermore, nursing is a field where one can have a meaningful impact on the lives of others, which provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

In conclusion, I chose nursing as my major because of my personal experiences, interest in healthcare, alignment with my values, and the opportunities for professional and personal growth. Nursing is a career that offers a diverse range of opportunities, allowing me to find my niche and make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. I am excited about the prospect of pursuing a career in nursing and making a difference in the healthcare field.
