What psychology did to me by Genesis - September 2017 Scholarship Essay
It was the summer before sophomore year when I decided to go online to Florida virtual school and take a psychology class. Originally I didn't think I'd enjoy taking an online class, I was doing it to get rid of an online credit requirement, I never thought I would find myself captivated on the subject of how the mind works and why some people act the way they do.
After I finished the class I found myself extensively looking up things such as reinforcement, and psychological case studies like little Albert or the Stanford prison experiment. Fast forward a year later to when I had to sign up for classes and found out my school offered AP Psychology as an elective . I automatically put that as my number one choice so it was no surprise that when junior year came around AP psychology was in my schedule. As soon as as I walked into the classroom I instantly regretted it, the teacher gave us a packet of work on top of a pretest, which I had failed. Little did I know then that this was a test to see who really wanted to be in the class and who was there because they had no other choice because by the next week the class had shrunk in over half its size, yet I stayed. The longer I stayed in the class the more captivated by the subject I became it got to the point where I would deliberately try to lead the class discussions because the subject made me happy.
There was a point in the class where psychology helped me understand why some people treated me the way they did in the past. when I was younger I got bullied and being Hispanic didn't help my case at the school I went to. People would call me dumb and make fun of me and it wasn't a great experience overall, but anyways in psychology I learned about how things were self taught and people conform to what others believe in a group setting.
Psychology opened my eyes to social issues and how things can be fixed, it also showed me a path I could take for my future career ,it taught me a lot about myself and about others and the world.
