The moral of the story by Genesis - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
Fascinated with the adventures, the romance and the mystery of it all, and in the end to make it even better every story had its lesson. From the darkness hidden in the Grim brother's fairy tales to the unmasked secret of friendship in modern media every story has a lesson within it. If I were to teach a class as a professor, my class would be about finding the lessons hidden within pieces of literature such as the great Gatsby or even Frankenstein. Many classic novels have been left forgotten by the media, which has imprisoned the minds of today's generation limiting them to read 140 characters or less at a time. In my lecture, my students would analyze the context of the book and the message it is trying to send considering into account the time in which it was written and how relevant it is to modern day society and its issues.
Alongside with analyzing classics and introducing the generation to what true literature was my class will clear up misconceptions adolescents and children believe about classics today, such as the fact that Frankenstein was the creator of the monster and not the name of the actual monster. Other misconceptions I could teach my class about would be the fact that Romeo and Juliet committed suicide at the same time when in fact the story is a bit more complicated than that. In reality, Juliet drank an elixir that put her into a deep slumber causing Romeo to think she is lifeless and pushes him to drink poison, whilst Juliet awakens sees Romeo dead and stabs herself with a dagger.
I would teach this class because I enjoy literature and believe today's generation doesn't appreciate it nearly as enough as it should be. The reality of it all is that today people aren't reading anymore, many are all spiraling down the black hole that is the internet and it would be a shame to lose the few readers left in the world. Teaching this class would open the world back up to reading, teach students helpful lifelong lessons, and clear up many misconceptions the media has provoked.I've always been in love with reading and by teaching a class on the lessons stories teach us I feel like I could make a difference one student at a time and maybe bring back reading a book before bed.
