Me In Ten Years by Gavin - March 2025 Scholarship Essay
I am currently attending university in pursuit of my bachelor’s in graphic design. I am steadily making progress toward this goal, as I have just earned my associate’s this past fall. Throughout the challenges of COVID-19 and other obstacles, I've learned two important truths: the future is uncertain, and some things are simply out of our control. I used to think frequently about “where I would be” in the future. However, these last couple of years have shown me that some destinations are delayed and some are changed entirely. Fortunately, my path and destination have stayed relatively the same, but I have had some roadblocks along the way.
Despite these setbacks, I understand that my only option is to push forward and do everything I can to achieve my goals. With that said, ten years from today, I hope to be successful in a career I love, with a family to share that success. I envision myself as a graphic designer specializing in logo design, branding, print production, and product packaging. When I say "successful," I don’t mean in wealth, but the ability to serve others and contribute to their success. Whether as a freelancer or working for an agency, I see my artistic talents as a way to help others, and that is where my true career success will lie.
I know that with time I can make this hope a reality, but I know that it won’t just happen. My education is the key to my success, both professionally and personally. Graphic design is an industry of service, the sole purpose of it is to help others communicate to the public with visuals. When people see interesting flyers, iconic logos, or easy-to-use apps, most see a good product, but not the factors that make it a great product. My education will have provided me with the tools and the building blocks of good design. I can confidently create “good” designs, but a deeper understanding of color theory, design principles, and typography will enable me to create not only good, but amazing and functional products.
As I learn about the tedious process behind creating behind seemingly “simple” posters and flyers, I’m realizing that the best outcomes come from consideration, understanding, and empathy. The skills I’m gaining in college will not only make me a better designer, but also a better person. By learning to see things from different perspectives, I’ll not only connect with clients but also build meaningful relationships with my future family.
This is the future I hope to see in ten years, but it could happen later and that is okay. I am committed to becoming the best designer I can be and supporting others' success along the way. Through perseverance and the education I’m receiving, my goals are well within reach. There will be disturbances in my path, and there will be things beyond my control, but I have control over my actions and mindset. These will be the driving forces that push me toward my dreams.
