Technology: A New Way Of Life by Gavin - January 2020 Scholarship Essay
If you asked your grandparents, or a person of advanced age, what one of the most dramatic changes that has happened to the world since their childhood, they would probably say something along the lines of "Well, back in my day, we never had any of these cell phones, or computers." and they would be right. Technology has advanced at exponential rates over even the last few decades. But with this rapid advance of technology, the question must be asked, is the use of technology really benefiting our society and education?
Personally, as a college freshman, I have seen the advances of technology impact my life in very positive ways. My classrooms are usually outfitted with "Smart Boards" which are essentially advanced black boards, allowing teachers to write, draw, and present on subjects with ease. I have also seen teachers use "Hybrid Classes". How a Hybrid Class works is a teacher will record a live lecture, interacting with students and answering questions from those attending class, and then later after the class is finished, upload the lecture to a student webpage allowing students to view the lecture from at home. This will give the students two options of attending classes, either go to see the physical live lecture, or wait until the lecture is uploaded and view it at home. This method of teaching allows busy college students a more flexible schedule, and less stress over attending every single class, when more pressing matters may take their time.
I have also had the privilege of attending a class where the teacher is willing to use a program called "Zoom" (An app much like Face Time, or Skype) to visually meet with students in need. This amazing technology allows teachers to give one on one instruction to students that have struggles or questions with their academics.
Personally, Technology has improved my education in classroom, and out of classroom, so I can continue to perform the best that I can, and receive the highest level of education possible so I can pursue my dreams and live my best life.
