In the Interests of Others by Garrett - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

In the Interest of Others

My dream is others' happiness and prosperity. To pursue this dream, I will be attending the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL). The saying knowledge is power is one that echoes in my head, yet “power” is not my aim. Power is the ability to influence others and I want to be an influence for good.

Many people in the United States are stuck in slums, homeless and suffering from poverty. Regardless of whose fault it is, it does not matter. If someone wants help, I want to be there when no one else will. By pursuing the understanding of money through a finance degree and independent studies, I will gain the knowledge needed to become wealthy enough to pick up those who need to be picked up.

As a man of God, it hurts to see those suffering and even worse to see well-off people condemning them. Not only do they suffer daily instead of others picking them up or doing the bare minimum and treating them as human, but to compound it, they are degraded and chastised. With this thought in mind, I want to do more than provide a meal, I want to own a plethora of businesses to employ those who are looking for genuine change. I want to form organizations to help the homeless and encourage others to help the homeless. I’m looking to providing them with a new life.

With God by my side, I’m confident I can do this, and God has led me along the path of education to understand how this strange piece of paper can make or break someone's life. I will spend my life helping those in need. It is my calling. To do this I need to know how to do it. Fully aware of the pitfalls of wealth, with Jesus in my heart, I can break through the barriers of corruption and help those who are not cast aside as a plague to society. For every good thing God has and will do for me, I want to return it twofold to someone who needs it.

This is what keeps me focused. This unwavering determination to do good. I'm tired of witnessing the neglect of men and women sitting outside a fast-food chain asking for some food only to be called a bum. Through faith and education, I’m dedicated to making a difference. It’s more than a dream; it's my calling. I am ready to embark on this journey of learning, so I can help those who need it the most.
