How to Live Your Life by Garrett - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
You can go in several different directions with this question, but I want to answer this question in a way that would hopefully change some people’s lives, if this was a real class. I would teach “Living Life 101”. You see, I think people get so caught up in school, work, and materialistic objects that they forget about what life is really about. My course would hopefully help my students see the bigger picture. My students would learn to appreciate what they have and not take the little things for granted like so many people do today. I find it very important to make it known to the people that you care about, that you actually care. It seems like people nowadays can hardly express their feelings so I would try to get my students to get out of their comfort zone. There are so many ways that you can let a person know you care and I would help my students do these things.
I would try to help my students understand that a job is just a job, and no matter how hard it is to see, money cannot buy happiness. I’ll show them how real death is and how at any given moment, your life, or a loved one’s life, can be taken away. I would depict the importance of living your life to the fullest and spending time with friends, but even more so, family. In the end, the fame and fortune will not matter a bit, but the people that have been with you through it all will matter. It’s not about what you have that makes your life great, it is about how you live your life that will determine your happiness in the end. I would want to challenge my students to go out and make a difference in the world, make someone smile, show someone that they are loved, be a good person, and always be thankful for what you have. I would hope that my students would carry this on after the course is over in whatever they do.
Teaching a course like this would be rewarding for not just for my students, but for myself. One of the greatest things a person can do is positively effect another’s life. If everyone could take a class like this, and realize how you are supposed to live life, think about how great this world could be. I am not saying I am the best teacher, but the basic ideas of loving one another, being appreciative, and showing people you care, could change society for the better. In a world with so much conflict and hate, a little change would not hurt. If I taught a class like this, hopefully I would change a few people’s lives while I am at it and also, leave a lasting impression on each and every student I would have.
