It's not recruiting, it's serving its purpose by Gaofeng - June 2018 Scholarship Essay
Colonel John Herschel Glenn Jr once said, “There was a sense of community and community service then as well...I think we lost that”. Nowadays, there are more technology that are keeping people inside of their own homes rather than interacting with other people in person. In high school, teamwork isn’t emphasized as frequent and the students’ mindsets are more individual based. However, there’s an elective that does involve teamwork in a classroom setting, and that elective is called the “Juniors’ Reserved Officer Training Corps, (JROTC).” The mission of the JROTC program is to instill leadership, teamwork, and discipline; to strive for improvement of the cadets (students) themselves, and their community. Even though this program is offered through the military, it’s not a used as recruiting tool for the military.
JROTC is a program that instills leadership, teamwork, and military discipline; to strive for improvement of the cadets themselves, and their community. Not everyone is able to step out of their comfort zone to speak out, and take the lead. In JROTC, however, each cadet will have the opportunity to be in a leadership role. Cadets would be assigned tasks that challenges their leadership abilities, and this makes the cadets’ have a more strategic and critical way of thinking.
Not only does this program offer a chance to be a leader, be a part of a team, or instill military discipline, but the program encourages the cadets to make the community a little better each day. One of the ways that JROTC encourages on making the community better is through community service. There are community services such as: school carnivals, trash pick-up, school clean-up, and many more! The opportunities are infinitive, but the idea behind it is to make the community better together.
Each day as a JROTC cadet, means that there are constant opportunities to find improvements. A person may be very talented at a certain hobby, but may want to improve on another hobby. JROTC may not provide all of the hobbies in the world, but the program will encourage for always striving for improvements. JROTC would also give ideas that were probably never there in the first place, such as rocket model building. So even if the program doesn’t have all the hobbies in the world, a cadet can count on having encouragement to take on a new approach.
Overall, JROTC programs are great to have in high schools because of its purpose for existence. JROTC is a program that is to instill leadership, teamwork, and discipline; to strive for improvement of the cadets (students) themselves, and their community. Not many people are interacting in person anymore. JROTC do their best to have students enter as students, and graduate as people that hope to make a change to better our world.
