Academic Motivation by Gabryella - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

My mother had me when she was 16. She had to grow up at a rapid rate and give up a lot within her life to care for me. She finished high school early and she didn't get the college experience. It was just her and I for awhile, then my stepfather came into the picture. He didn't go to college and only has a high school diploma. I had them, but I also had my grandma who supported me endlessly and helped me with school. Because of this, I have pushed myself to be academically driven since a child.
My goal was always to make my family proud and get a good education. I've always strived to get good grades and become something since I'm the reason my mom wasn't able to. Every time I start to doubt myself or feel like I'm not good enough, I remind myself why I'm pushing for these goals.
At the point I'm at now, I have a younger brother who's currently in middle school. He looks up to me for everything involving school and always comes to me for help. Being an older sister motivates me because I want to be his mentor and motivation. When I start to feel like I'm not good enough, I think of what my brother would think.
My motivation is also what helps me focus. If I start to become distracted or can't pay attention to my assignments, I call my parents, my brother, or my grandma. I tell them what's going on or how I'm struggling and they'll remind me of what I can accomplish. They are my reason for everything I do.
My one main goal in life is to push myself to do the greatest I can do and make my family proud. They've believed in me since I was little and they've never doubted me, so I know I shouldn't ever doubt myself either.
