Empowering Minds: My Journey Toward a Career in Mental Health Counseling by Gabrielle - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

Choosing a college major is a decision that shapes one’s educational and professional future, and for me, this decision is guided by both my passions and a deep-seated desire to make a meaningful impact on the world. As someone deeply committed to understanding human behavior and advocating for mental well-being, I plan to major in Mental Health Counseling.

The field of mental health has always intrigued me because of its complexity and the potential it offers to help individuals navigate some of life’s most challenging experiences. Growing up in a community where emotional well-being wasn’t always openly discussed, I noticed how mental health often took a backseat to physical health or financial stability. Yet, over time, I saw the profound impact that mental health struggles could have on individuals and families. This realization fueled my desire to pursue a career where I could make a tangible difference in people’s lives, providing support and guidance to those experiencing mental health challenges.

In particular, I am interested in how different factors—such as culture, social class, and family dynamics—affect mental health. Having been raised in a multicultural and diverse environment, I have always had an appreciation for how people’s backgrounds shape their experiences, including their mental health. I am fascinated by how different cultural frameworks approach mental health care and how counselors can adapt their techniques to be more inclusive and culturally sensitive. For example, in my Jamaican-American community, mental health is often seen through a spiritual or holistic lens, and this cultural perspective has sparked my interest in integrating alternative healing methods, such as herbalism, into therapeutic practice. I want to explore how holistic approaches to therapy, including mindfulness and energy healing, can complement traditional mental health interventions.

Moreover, my academic background and personal experiences have equipped me with the qualities necessary to be an effective counselor. I am naturally empathetic, open-minded, and a good listener, qualities that I believe are essential for understanding and assisting those in need. Throughout my studies, I have been exposed to psychological theories, and I find myself gravitating toward those that emphasize human potential, resilience, and growth. I believe that counseling is not just about addressing mental health crises but about empowering individuals to overcome challenges, unlock their full potential, and lead fulfilling lives.

The stigma surrounding mental health remains a significant barrier in many communities, and I feel a personal responsibility to help change this narrative. Pursuing a degree in Mental Health Counseling will not only provide me with the technical knowledge needed to help others, but it will also allow me to advocate for mental health awareness, educate others about its importance, and push for better access to care, particularly for underserved populations.

In conclusion, I chose Mental Health Counseling because it aligns with my passion for helping others, my interest in human behavior, and my belief in the power of healing. I want to be part of a movement that challenges societal norms, reduces stigma, and provides a safe space for individuals to address their mental health needs. This major is not just a career path for me, it is a calling to be an agent of change and a source of healing for those who need it most.
