The Great Unknown by Gabrielle - June 2023 Scholarship Essay

I don’t know where I’ll be in ten years. A lot of people have such a concrete idea on where they’ll end up, even from an early age. Some people are made to be doctors, nurses, lawyers, specialists in their fields. But I’m different— I’m not sure where I’ll be in ten years. I’ve been pushed all my life to excel in school, to be a lawyer because I could ‘argue’ or into medicine because it is ‘safe’. However, I never had a passion for either of those fields, or any other field in particular. In ten years, I’ll be in my 20’s, likely fresh out of college, if I choose the medical route, but that is not what I want for my life. I don’t want my youth to wane away, not having tried or experienced anything, basically new to the outside world.
People expect you to have a passion from the time you are born, but that’s not realistic. I still haven’t come to a conclusion on what I want to pursue— or even a glimpse of what the future may hold. I don’t plan on holding a corporate office job, a 9 to 5. So, I’ve come to the conclusion that I will pursue a business/financial degree. This give me the flexibility to not only decide what I want to pursue, because the field is so broad, but I will know how to be financially responsible, making my money ‘work for me’ in the words of Robert Kiyosaki. This can be attained by pursuing a degree, not only for the accolades, but for the knowledge I can attain to grow my own assets and belittle my liabilities. From there, the future is endless, unknown.
