Just Like Everyone Else by Gabrielle - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my many years of schooling, I’ve had many teachers and I’ve learned many lessons, most of which have been academic, with a few life lessons thrown in as well. I’ve learned English, Math, History, and Science and I’ve learned right from wrong. However, by far one of the most important lessons I have ever been privy to learn is not one that you are only taught once, it is one you are taught multiple times by multiple teachers until it finally kicks in and you realize that all these years all of your teachers have been right. The most important lesson I was ever taught was this: everything in life is not going to just be handed to you, you have to work for what you get.
Growing up, a lot of my schoolwork came very easy to me. I didn’t really have to try that hard to make good grades, it just happened, so naturally, I assumed that all my teachers were wrong and everything could just be handed to me. Then, one day, I realized that I’m just like everyone else. While math problems and memorizing dates in history might come easy to me, real life problems probably won’t. I realized that along the way, there will be problems and most of them probably won’t be that easy to deal with. Upon this realization, I told myself that even though schoolwork and life might come easy to me, I need to start applying myself now so that I can be better prepared for hardships to come in the future.
With the reality of college approaching fast, this lesson has helped me accept the fact that college, and life, for that matter, won’t come easy. By applying myself now, I can hopefully be better prepared and relieve some of the stress of college. Thankfully, my teachers have been trying to teach me this lesson my whole life, so I had time to accept it. I believe most teachers try to teach everyone this lesson at one point or another and I encourage everyone to listen and understand that they are right. Not everything is going to come easy to us and we will have to work hard for everything we get.
