The Show by Gabriella - November 2023 Scholarship Essay

The T.V. clicked on in the midst of a cool November afternoon. The leaves have already all changed, which displayed gorgeous warm tones all around and half have fallen, painting the ground. The electric fireplace warms the area around our feet while flickering golden light around the room. Soft blankets swarm the plush couch to provide extra comfort to myself and my gramma. She had already put her crossword booklet aside as I vigorously flipped through the channels, changing it from the Science Channel where my dad and I previously watched How It’s Made. I finally found HGTV and my gramma and I both smiled as we saw that Fixer Upper was on air.
A common trend throughout my childhood is the constant search through a lens of curiosity to see exactly how the world works and how people come together to create wonders around us. Walking on stage at 3 years old, I wouldn’t pay attention to the other kids doing their forward rolls before me, I was too busy craning my next to look at all the lights and rafters suspended dozens of feet above. Again, when rides would stop at amusement parks, I would take the chance to look around at all the mechanics which create such magical and exciting scenes. Even now, I look at absolutely everything we have created and wonder how it’s possible to craft such things. But the thing that excites me the most, homes. How bands of people work together to create buildings for families that will last a lifetime if kept well. Someone writes up the plans, others build it, and then teams furnish it to make it perfect for incoming memories and lives.
More recently, I’ve dug deep into my interests, using YouTube as one of my main sources for entertainment and education. Countless videos on interior architecture and design flood my feeds and open my eyes to all the different possibilities that can happen in a home. All you need is a little imagination and practicality, and you can make your wildest ideas stand before you. I believe that creativity is a key to life. Creative is a word most people associate with coming up with your own characters, creatures, story lines, or just being able to draw a decent picture. While yes this is true, there is more than that. I am creative in a way that I can easily synthesize solutions to simple problems. I love to merge things together and hide things within others to combine all aspects of something into one. I’m also known within my family and friend groups as clever with all the little “hacks” I seem to pull from thin air.
In my future, I see myself living a life that will make me happy and make plenty of money for my future family to survive upon. My absolute dream is to own an architectural firm that will have several different departments with their own specialties. Of course, I know that may be unrealistic as a near future expectation, but it’s something I know I can make possible later in life. For now, a degree in interior architecture or interior design will help me begin my journey. Almost every day, I fantasize about the life that I will create with my partner. The gorgeous home we will build with plenty of land for whatever our hearts desire. And I know that in that home the T.V. will click on, blankets will be wrapped, and HGTV will play once again. Maybe a little of How It’s Made, too.
