The Passion by Gabriella - August 2022 Scholarship Essay
As I stood on the edge of the theater of my old high school, rays of artificial stage lights hit my skin with a sharpness like the glare of LED’s found at a doctor’s office. The brightness nearly concealed the beams of pride flushing my countenance. I exited the stage while receiving a rush of applause from the large audience full of my classmates, family, and other members from my school community. It was at that moment, I knew, I wanted to continue my research efforts in college. I felt a burning in my stomach, an ache, that told me that this was what I was meant to do and learn in the coming years.
My senior thesis project consisted of a 30 page paper, an artistic component, and a 40 minute powerpoint presentation that was done before my school’s alumni, parents, students, and members of our community. My experience with my thesis was just a taste of what I imagined I could discover during my undergraduate. It is the driving force behind my passion to continue my findings, and perhaps even use them to expand on other projects that may come up.
At my university this fall, I hope to become a research fellow for the Women & Gender Studies Department. One of the things that is so unique about Brandeis University, is that the campus has an entire facility dedicated to research done in the Women & Gender Studies field. I hope to be able to assist, discover, and perhaps even conduct some research on my own in such a facility, and one day, be published.
My ultimate goal of publication will not be an easy task, as I have already learned how difficult it is to do half of such work through my thesis. My goal for this year is to learn what the undergraduate research experience is like, so that I may be able to use the skills I learn from my peers in my future endeavors and discoveries. I recognize that although such a goal can be tasking, my burning passion that was lit by the straining lights and the cheering crowd last March, shall be the same fire that will fuel me through the difficulties and successes I may come across this next year.
