My High School Extracurricular Activity by Gabriella - September 2019 Scholarship Essay
Given the opportunity to establish a high school extracurricular activity, I would found a Go Green club. This club would not only participate in community events and promote self-awareness but also educate it’s members and the community about current events and ways to reduce their carbon footprint.
Personally, I am an extremely environmentally aware and cautious of my impact on the world and believe others should engage and be aware of their own influence, this is their Earth too. After spending my summers as a counselor at an environmental summer camp and educating the youth of America, I continue to uphold these activities and ideas practiced at the camp in my own life. I think educating high schoolers is particularly important because they are the leaders of tomorrow and will make the biggest impact on our world, if anyone is going to make a change it’s going to be this generation. We would be informed on local and global events regarding the environment and how our activities contribute to the detriment of the environment and find alternative solutions.
This club would participate in and organize community events, for instance, beach or trash clean-ups, planting trees, and promote recycling and upcycling. Members would also make efforts to reduce emissions by carpooling and walking more, using less paper, and stop using single-use plastics. These gestures would, hopefully, inspire peers and the surrounding community to participate as well. Members, additionally, would attend city meetings and be activists in the community by promoting eco-friendly ideals and solutions.
Given the increasing push towards a greener Earth, I think that a lot of students would enjoy and benefit from a club like this. It gives students a chance to become educated and engaged in the world as well as improves America and the rest of the worlds’ future seeing as these students will have a large impact on the future.
