Remembrance and growth by Gabriela - September 2024 Scholarship Essay
My favorite non-traditional way to learn would be where I try to compare objects of any study similar to each other. I feel as though I learn my best or tend to comprehend new or any information by this method. For example, there are levels at my workplace so the higher you go the more information there is to your current state of work. So when learning a new skill I always revert back to old information of what I learned in my previous level. I always catch myself saying, “Oh so it's kind of like how we used to do this” or “Oh yeah so it is like this version but we are using this new version instead?”.
I can confidently say that this method has helped me learn information the best and is my favorite non-traditional way to learn because it is more so a game of remembrance than anything. I do believe that many methods of learning all tie into each other and every individual learns differently.
Honestly, what I am learning outside of school right now is about myself through injury. I recently tore my ACL this past summer which led to my having surgery. So now I am in the recovery process of my knee injury. I am learning how to use my left knee again. Learning how to walk and get up and bend and straighten my knee has taught me it takes so much for one thing and right now the one thing is walking how I used to.
Doing physical therapy so far has made me realize that things get better but you just have to be consistent. I had this happen in my other knee. So this process is not fairly new unfortunately but I was mentally a different person when I was going through that time. Now, I am learning old habits but new ones as well. Going through this again makes my method of learning more so come alive as I am going back to sports this time because last time I did not want to due to my own insecurities. Though this current learning curve is going to teach me the kind of person I am and that going through things twice can cause a different and better outcome. I am learning about myself and the power of the mind and I will continue to learn and grow.
