What Makes a Leader by Gabriel - December 2021 Scholarship Essay
One of my favorite quotes that I have read was, “great leaders don’t set out to be a leader...they set out to make a difference. It’s never about the role-always about the goal.” Leaders are inclusive, honest, and have a fire within them to fight for what they believe in. Leaders are willing to do everything to change today’s day and age for the better. One of the most outstanding leaders I looked up to growing up was Mahatma Gandhi.
Gandhi completely changed political protesting with non-violent protests that fought for civil rights in India. He was a man looking to change the corrupted world around him. Mahatma was willing to do everything he asked others to show people he would not betray them during this civil rights movement. Gandhi was imprisoned for a year because of an activity that didn’t cause any harm or disturbance to anybody except for the British. He sought to change something he believed wasn’t right and changed many lives even after he died in 1948.
He had a fire that drove him to fight for what was right. He had an incredible ability to bring many people together in his movement that forced the British to leave the power they had over India behind. If I had to take one thing away from his legacy, it would be that you have to be the change you want to see in the world. No one will take action for what is right, and you can be the fire that drives people to fight for what is right.
