why I think electives/ extracurricular activities should be a required class. by gabe - June 2025 Scholarship Essay
some kids, like myself, aren't the greatest when it really comes to learning and trying new things. It can especially be hard when you don't have a lot of friends or people around to help, or if you're just struggling to keep up because you don't learn as fast as other students. this is where extracurricular activities and clubs come in. these things can be places for students to get away from the sometimes harsh setting that certain classrooms and teachers can give, and to enter their own world of imagination and fun, whether its staying a little while after school to shoot a basketball with a few friends, or joining a club with new people who share the same interests as you. its little things like these gatherings that can go a long way in the uplifting of your mood and the moods of those around you. students can use the extra time to find out things about themselves that they otherwise would never discover. They can use it as an escape from reality, to truly be themselves and not feel judged by others, but to instead come together with more students who feel the same way. To be able to express yourself without penalty is one of the greatest feeling you can have, knowing you can be yourself in a place of peace you otherwise couldn't be able to such as home, or work. having a class like this could be potentially relieving in such a strict place of learning. Letting go for a period to forget about school and relax and have a little fun is a luxury not to be taken for granted and is something I think all students should enjoy.
