Breakfast at Tiffany's by Franceska - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

Audrey Hepburn is most famously known as the extraordinarily talented actress, and is widely adored for her elegant roles in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and My Fair Lady. Several of her popular works earned her the most coveted awards in the film industry: an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award. Her beauty and devotion to her career is what made her a film icon of Hollywood's Golden Age. However, more often than not, her life’s work as a humanitarian is often unknown by many, or overshadowed. Past the glamour of her actress days, Hepburn devoted a large portion of her life to working with UNICEF as their Goodwill Ambassador, even working between movies to travel to countries such as Ethiopia. Hepburn was transparent with the public with the passion she had to help the hungry. After her first trip to Ethiopia, Hepburn explained, “The 'Third World' is a term I don't like very much, because we're all one world.” I believe this quote embodies the spirit and motivation Hepburn had to help the underprivileged.
I would choose to have a meal with Audrey Hepburn because I believe we share a unique passion. Although it is not in my capability to be traveling across the world right now, I hope to make a difference on a smaller scale. Operation Christmas Child is an organization that, with the help of volunteers across the nation, packs shoeboxes with small toys, gifts, hygiene products and clothing for children in developing countries. With the help of classmates, friends, and shoebox donations from Payless Shoe Source Stores, I have been putting together several boxes for this past Christmas season. If I had the opportunity to speak with Audrey Hepburn, I think being able to connect with someone who shares a passion for those in need would not only motivate my compassion, but it would also offer me insight into this emotionally-fulfilling investment and would be an experience that I would treasure, especially since she had such a heart for this kind of work. Additionally, I loved Audrey Hepburn’s style and that time era’s fashion in general, and I think with the help of Audrey, we could bring it back.
